Today, The Partially Sighted Society stands with people living with albinism, a rare genetic condition that affects melanin production, impacting the colour of the skin, hair, and most significantly, vision.
People with albinism often face:
• Reduced visual acuity
• Photophobia (light sensitivity)
• Nystagmus (involuntary eye movement)
• Difficulties with reading, depth perception, and fine detail
These visual challenges can affect learning, confidence, and independence, but with the right support and accessible tools, people with albinism can and do thrive.
How We Support the Albinism Community:
At The Partially Sighted Society, we:
• Provide low vision assessments, visual aids, and practical guidance
• Help individuals adapt their environments for greater confidence at school, work, and home
• Offer specialist advice to those living with sight loss from birth
We’re also proud to extend our support globally.
Every year, we donate thousands of surplus large print books to schools in Tanzania, many of which serve children with visual impairments - including a significant number born with albinism.
These books provide more than just reading material - they offer access to education, promote literacy, and help build confidence where resources are limited.
In Tanzania, widespread myths and superstitions about albinism have led to heart-breaking discrimination, social exclusion, and even violence. Children with albinism face not only visual impairment but also threats to their safety and access to education
.
That’s why our support matters.
We believe every child deserves the chance to live, read, learn, and grow in a world where they are safe, seen, and supported.
