Today is White Cane Safety Day, and we’re celebrating the white cane for what it makes possible.
The walk to work and the detour to the good bakery. The first trip somewhere new and the familiar route home. Meeting a friend, catching a train or changing your plans halfway there.
For many people living with sight loss, a white cane is part of getting on with the day. Behind each one is a person with places to be, people to see and plans of their own.
Those of us sharing the pavement have a part to play too. A little space, a friendly word and a patient pause can make a massive difference.
